Some Classic Gospel & Soul From Legendary Mavis Staples
Today’s #TrackOfTheDay comes from an absolute legend – none other than Mavis Staples – who is still going strong at the age of 76. The track Take Us Back comes from Mavis’ latest album Livin’ On A High Note, a superb collection of refreshing Soul and R&B songs. The album is Staples’ fourteenth solo album, the first since 2013’s One True Vine, it comes forty-seven years after her debut album Mavis Staples in 1969.
Her career started as a member of The Staple Singers, known for hits such as Respect Yourself, I’ll Take You There and Let’s Do It Again, Staples won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Americana Album for her album You Are Not Alone, in her acceptance speech she said “This has been a long time coming!” We couldn’t agree more – we love her work here. She has kept her fans waiting for three years for this latest effort, but it has been well worth the wait.
Okay so we know its not strictly blues, but she has done enough blues in her time to deserve a place on this blog with this new track. The track itself is typical Mavis, very soulful, bassy and with elements of gospel for good measure – typical classic R&B. But by no means does Staples rest on her laurels here, her sound is crisper than ever, more measured in tempo and just as memorable as her previous efforts. Mavis’ position as a legend in the industry is augmented by this new album.
