A Little Something Different For Malaya Blue Second Time Around
Today’s sublime #TrackOfTheDay comes from another new album released just days ago Heartsick from the album of the same name by Malaya Blue. Malaya has been on our radar for a long time thanks to her first album Bourbon Street which we had a lot of time for, particularly with tracks like Bitter Moon, and we are delighted that she is back. Her style is a blues and jazz hybrid with some retro tones, sometimes verging on gospel soul – however we are getting none of that from this new track.
Heartsick is an absolute corker of a track and totally from left field as far as we are concerned. We wouldn’t exactly call Malaya soft blues, but an almighty guitar riff and prominent drums blended with the cracking vocals we know, was simply not on the cards. We were like boxing judges at Strictly Come Dancing. The track is relentless, driven and a statement of intent from someone who is trying to make her first album look like a warm up.
We don’t know how the rest of the album sounds as yet, as we kept pressing rewind on track one, but were hoping it continues in the same vein. Trust us, this is well worth a listen. We loved Bourbon Street but were expecting this to be something else – purely on the strength this track. What do you think of Heartsick? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
